"The Girl from Ipanema" ("Garota de Ipanema") is a well-known bossa nova song, a worldwide hit in the mid-
1960s that won a Grammy for "Record of the Year" in 1965. It was written in 1962, with music by Antonio
Carlos Jobim and Portuguese lyrics by Vinicius de Moraes with English lyrics written later by Norman Gimbel. It is
sometimes sung by female artists as "The Boy from Ipanema."
The first commercial recording was in 1962, by Pery Ribeiro. The version performed by Astrud Gilberto, along
with João Gilberto and Stan Getz, from the 1963 album Getz/Gilberto, became an international hit. Numerous
recordings have been used in movies, often as an elevator music cliché.[citation needed]
In 2004, it was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National
Recording Registry

Guitarist Pat Martino's debut as a leader finds the 22-year-old showing off his roots in soul-jazz organ groups while looking ahead at the same time. Joined by organist Trudy Pitts, flutist Danny Turner, drummer Mitch Fine, and both Abdu Johnson and Vance Anderson on percussion, Martino primarily plays a straight-ahead set (five of his originals, "Just Friends," and "Once I Loved"), but already displays a fairly distinctive sound. This CD reissue brings back Martino's impressive start to what would be a productive solo career. [A Rudy Van Gelder remaster appeared in 2007.]

Recorded May 1, 1967, this session was Pat Martinos first album as leader. His guitar moves valiantly with all the swagger of a cowboy; smoking guns and flying fingers dot the landscape of his trail. The allusion, of course, is to Paul Newmans Western film Hombre that came out the same year.
Both are unforgettable. Both feature young lion artists in their earliest successes and there are, indeed, many parallels between the music and the movie. The film was released in March of that year. Martinos album was released shortly after. Rhythms drive the album hard, like hoof beats of many horses in motion. Martinos preference for the bass notes of the guitar underlies the stomping walk of good men and bad men on a mission. With its guitar, flute, organ, drum, congas and bongos instrumentation, Martinos album reflected the 1960s as well as Paul Newmans minority-group-member-pushed-to-his-limits character. The album and the film were not directly related, but El Hombre lends itself to many hours of creative interplay on the part of the listener.
With six original compositions on this program of eight pieces, Martino carved his niche in modern jazz with a bang. This Rudy Van Gelder remastering brings the sound to us with utmost eloquence, balancing the band perfectly while keeping Martino at center front. The blues run through this program and flutist Danny Turner, drummer Mitch Fine and organist Trudy Pitts play a major role in giving the world a look at Philadelphias cowboys, while the addition of percussionists Abdu Johnson (congas) and Vance Anderson (bongos) completes the recipe with plenty of zest. Theres much to like here, even if youre not a fan of movie Westerns.
